Welland should know Canada geese are protected by law

Re: Welland hatches a plan to control its Canada geese along recreational corridor, June 4

May I suggest the Welland mayor and city council check the regulations about getting rid of Canada geese?

Go to the internet and enter “Federal regulations and getting rid of Canada geese.”

Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act of 1994.

Please note it is against the law to bother these geese when nesting has started, as is moving or scaring these geese off of a nest. It is illegal to tamper with a nest, eggs or birds without a permit.

This also applies to illegal hunting, wood harvesting, commercialization and trafficking.
