Fees at region landfills are set to rise on April 1

THE ST. CATHARINES STANDARD

Niagara Region is increasing fees at its disposal sites starting April 1 on items including garbage, construction and demolition materials, shingles and contaminated soil.

The changes to fee rates for garbage, construction and demolition material 50 kilograms and above will go up $2.50 per tonne, to $122.50.

The fee for shingles for both residential and commercial changes is going up $5 per tonne, to $80.

For clean soil, the commercial changes will jump $9 a load, to $39, with a load defined as what fits in a single dump truck. The commercial cost to dispose of contaminated soil is going up $4 a tonne, to $39.

A news release from the region noted Fort Erie’s Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-Off Depot does not accept clean or contaminated soil. It also encouraged residents to separate recyclable materials to reduce waste going to landfills, saving on disposal fees.

Regional council approved changes to disposal fees Feb. 23 to reflect the actual cost of managing these materials, the news release said.
